MONEY ORDER

FEATURES AND BOOKING OF MONEY ORDER

"Money Order" is an order issued by the Post office for the payment of a sum of money through the agency of the Post Office. A "Remitter" is the person who sends money by means of a money order. A "Payee" is the person named in money order as the person to whom the money is to be paid.

Limits of value of single Money Order
Maximum Rs. 5000/- (Five Thousand Only)
Fraction of a rupee is not allowed.
Maximum Rs. 5000/- (Five Thousand Only)

Presentation

Money order should be prepared in the prescribed form purchased from a Post Office, legibly making the entries in ink or by print, in English, Hindi or  the regional language, by the remitter or on his behalf. The remitter should sign or affix his thumb mark in the form. The remitter may use the space provided the communication.

On Money Order sent on official business. the purpose of the remittance may be noted in the acknowledgement portion in continuation of the printed text "Received the sum of Rs....".

Remitter of Money Orders in bulk may use his own form conforming to the Department's form, and printed with the permission of Director-General, Posts.

A  Money Order is for single payee. Payee's name and complete address should be clearly written in the money order form. In respect of institutional payee, designation of the payee without the name is, however, in order the institution itself can be made the payee, without an individual designation, if so desired

The filled form, and the amount and commission should be presented at the counter of the Post Office, and receipt in the prescribed form obtained. If there is any error or omission in the receipt, it should be pointed out to the Post Office at once. Otherwise, the Post Office will not be responsible.

Alteration in Address or Place of Payment
Alteration in address or office of payment, but with out change of payee's name is permissible before payment, on written application from the remitter to the post office of issue giving full particulars, and enclosing the original receipt granted by the Post Office.

Alteration of Payee's Name
The name of the payee can be altered before payment, on payment of a second commission and on application from the remitter to the post office of issue, giving full particulars of the payee's address and enclosing the original receipt granted by the Post office.

Stoppage of Payment
Payment can be stopped and money repaid to the remitter on a written application from the remitter, giving full address of the payee and enclosing the original receipt, to the Post Office of issue. If the remitter pays telegraph charge. Stop Order will be conveyed by telegraph.

PAYMENT OF MONEY ORDER

Money is paid to the payee or to a person authorised by the payee in writing after getting the signature in link on the money order and acknowledgement. Money Order for a person who is not permanent resident in the area or not familiar to the paying official, will be paid only on proper proof of identity.

Notice for payment
Normally Money Order is paid at the address of the payee. But certain Post Offices have restrictions. In that case, notice is issued to the payee for receiving payment at the Post Office.

Illiterate Payee
If the payee is illiterate, his thumb mark is taken in the presence of a witness whose signature is obtained on the Money Order.

Payee's Acknowledgement
The remitter gets an acknowledgement of the payment. If this acknowledgement is not received in a reasonable time, remitter can have a certificate of payment issued by the Post master of the Post office of payment, on application to the Post Office of issue, enclosing the original receipt granted by the Post Office.

Payment of Money Orders  in Bulk
Payment of money Orders by Cheque or pay order is arranged in important Post offices to the payees receiving Money Order in Bulk.

Detention of Money Order
If the payee is not found or requests for detention, Money Order is detained at the post office for seven days from the date on which it was sent out for payment/presented.

Re-direction
Money Order will be redirected to new address, free of charge, if the payee has moved to a different station after giving written instructions to Post Office for redirection.

Repayment
If the payee is not found, or refuses to receive payment, Money order will be paid to the remitter.

LIABILITY OF POST OFFICE

The Post office will not be responsible for:

a) Wrong payment on account of incorrect or incomplete information given by the remitter      on the money order.

b) payee refusing, or delay to, the Money Order due to accidental neglect, omission or       mistake on the part of the post office.

c) wrong payment after one year from the date of issue or

d) failure to stop payment based on the request of the remitter.

SPEED POST MONEY ORDER

Money Order for Rs. 20/- or more can be sent by Speed Post between stations connected by Speed Post, on payment of speed post fee, besides the Money Order commission.

Speed Post fee is to be paid in the form of postage stamp(s) affixed or frank impressed on the form.

Booking is done at Speed Post Centre or counter.

Refund of Speed Post Fee
In case the Money Order is not paid with in the notified time -limit, due to operational fault of the department, Speed Post fee is refunded, on a claim to be preferred within three months from the date of issue.

TELEGRAPH MONEY ORDER (TMO)

Money Order will be transmitted by the telegraph, if so booked on payment of the prescribed fee. Telegraph Money Order is booked and paid by authorised Post offices.

Booking of Telegraphic Money Order

The remitter should write on the Money Order form " By Telegraph Express" or " By Telegraph Ordinary". Code word or abbreviated address should not be used in the address of the payee.

The Telegraph Money Order form, along with the amount, prescribed commission, supplementary charge, telegraph charge and late fee, if relevant, should be made over at the counter of the Post office.

Re-direction

Telegraph Money Order will be redirected from the original Post Office of payment, by post to the payee, free of charge, on his written request.

FAMILY ALLOTMENT MONEY ORDER (FAMO)

Family Allotment Money Order is issued in favour of dependant's) of defence Personnel. A special form is used for this purpose.

Booking
Forms should be presented at the Post office along with list of Money orders in duplicate/triplicate, depending upon the status of the Post Office, by the concerned Pay and accounts Office/record office of Defence Forces. The total amount and money order commission can be paid by crossed cheque/treasury certificate.

Reciept
The orginal copy of the list of Money Orders duly signed by Post master and date-stamped is returnable to the remitter. It serves as the reciept.

VOID MONEY ORDER

Money Order that could not be paid to the payee or remitter, may later be paid on special authority, to payee or remitter, on application within one year of the date of issue. If payee or remitter is dead, legal heir(s) of the deceased may claim payment within the same period, on execution of indemnity bond, with or without surety, depending on the amount as prescribed from time to time.

INDIAN POSTAL ORDER

Indian Postal Order Provides an easy means of sending small slums of money by post in denominations of Rs. 0.50, 1, 2, 5, 7, 10, 20, 50 and 100/-. Postal order is sold and paid by Head and sub Post offices and specially authorised Branch post Offices. Commission at the prescribed rate is payable for each Order.

Broken Amount
Unused postage stamp(s) upto Rs. 3/- in value and upto 4 number can be affixed on an order, except on Rs. 100/- denomination, in the space provided, to make up a broken amount. Stamp(s) in excess will be ignored.

Crossing of postal order and completion of Entries by Purchaser
The Purchaser should fill the name of the payee and the office of payment and his name and address on the order neatly in ink/by ball pen. the purchaser may cross the Order by simple or special crossing just like cheque.

It is advisable to retain the counterfoil with the purchaser, and to send the Order by registered post.

Payment
The Postal Order should be presented for payment at the post office counter after ensuring that the name of the payee and name of this post office of payment   are filled, and it is properly receipted by the payee.

Payment is made through bank. If the name of the bank is inserted in the Order payment is made only through that bank.

If the value of the postal order is less than the minimum amount for deposit or is in fraction of a rupee, the payee should pay the balance to make it the minimum or in whole rupee.

Banks which have entered into and express agreement with the post office can take immediate payment of all orders irrespective of whether  these have been receipted by the payee or not.


MISCARRIAGE , LOSS OR DESTRUCTION OF POSTAL ORDER

Application for enquiry to this effect should be immediately made along with the counterfoil to the divisional superintendent of Post offices or to the Senior Postmaster/Chief Postmaster of the Post Office of issue. If counterfoil is not available, required particulars, namely serial number of the order Post Office of issue and date of issue must be quoted. Application made after 12 months from the last day of the month of issue will not be entertained.

Altered, Mutilated or Incomplete Order

Payment may  be refused, if the Order :

a) contains erasure or alteration,
b) is cut, defaced or mutilated,
c) is not signed or date-stamped by the Postmaster of the Post Office of issue.
    the Post office may retain such order for enquiry, after giving receipt.

Period of Currency

A postal Order is current for six months from the last day of the  month of issue. It can be paid during the next six months on payment of a second commission in the shape of postage stamp(s) affixed on the reverse of the Order. Beyond that, it is forfeited.

Repayment to purchaser
The purchaser can take payment of the value of the order on presenting the order along with the counterfoil at the Post office of issue, within the period prescribed for payment in period of currency which is mentioned above. if the Order was crossed the purchaser must first cancel the crossing by writing across the face of the order the words " Please pay cash" over his initials.

Responsibility of the Post Office
After an order has  once been paid to whomsoever, Post Office shall not be liable for any further claim

BRITISH POSTAL ORDER/IRISH POSTAL ORDER

Payment of British/Irish Postal Order is made at selected Post offices. The currency of a British Postal Order is six months and that of an Irish Postal Order is three months from the date of purchase. This can be extended to an equal term on payment of second commission in the shape of Indian postage stamp(s) affixed on the back of the order.

Central Recruitment Fee Stamp
Central Recruitment fee Stamps of Rs. 2,5,8,10,20,50 and 100/- denominations for payment of examination fee to Union Public Service Commission and Staff Selection Commission are sold by authorised Post offices. Stamp(s) should be affixed on the application form, either in the earmarked spaces, if there is no space at the top right Post office will cancel the stamp(s) with its date stamp the impression party falling on the application No commission is due. INTERNATIONAL REPLY COUPON

International Reply Coupon can be purchased from Head Post Offices and certain Sub Post offices. It is exchangeable for postage stamps in any country that is member of the Universal Postal Union.

The coupon is usually sent for payment of postage for a reply.
